Fort Hood Shooting Trial Begins

hasan1The trial of alleged Fort Hood mass shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan began under heavy security, with a perimeter of stacked shipping containers and heavily armed guards.

Over the next several weeks, Hasan, who is representing himself, will defend himself against charges that he deliberately targeted and killed 13 military personnel and injured 30 more when he opened fire at Fort Hood in 2009.

Hasan’s initial defense strategy-that he was acting in defense of others, namely al Qaeda-was thrown out by a judge, so his strategy remains unclear. He’ll also likely face off with his victims in cross-examination. “I’m not going to dread anything,” one staff sergeant wounded by Hasan told the Associated Press. “That’s a sign of fear.” Read more.
