nyc-cabsIf you have too much to drink on New Year’s Eve, there’s an alternative to getting behind the wheel – and it won’t cost you a dime. From midnight to 5 a.m., a fleet of 10 taxi cabs will provide free rides to revelers who can’t safely and legally drive themselves home.

This isn’t the first year that the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers has offered the free rides as an alternative to driving while intoxicated on New Years Eve.

Fernando Mateo, spokesman for the NYSFTD, called past response to the program “overwhelming at times,” but added “I think that it saved lives and prevented accidents from occurring.”

Mateo stressed that the service is only for people who have driven to their New Year’s destination, and asked that the public not clog phone lines if they do not qualify.

No reservations for the rides are being taken. The taxis will not cross state lines, but will travel to Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan and the Bronx.

Calls will be accepted on New Year’s starting at midnight at (718) 492-7680.

  1. Am I missing something? I thought that this was a frum website. If so, why is there an article about taxis on new years? Last time I checked, driving on Rosh Hashanah was asur. So is getting drunk and celebrating the goyishe “New Year”.

Is there a similar program for Purim? That would be something that you should report on.
