Over thirty people are stuck in cable cars above the glaciers in Mont Blanc in the French Alps on Thursday night.
An initial rescue operation via helicopter was suspended due to dwindling light.
The cable cars got stuck at an altitude of 12,468 feet and it is unclear if the people inside will have to remain through the night. The cables got crossed initially in the day at around 4pm local time, leading to the issue.
Helicopters were used to rescue 65 people who had been stuck, but 33 people remain trapped in the Mont Blanc massif near Chamonix after the cars came to a halt between the Aiguille du Midi in France and Pointe Helbronner in Italy.
“We had to stop the rescuing operations when the night came because the helicopters can’t do the rescuing operation when it is dark,” Floriane Macian, a spokeswoman for the prefecture, said in a telephone interview, according to the NY Times. Read more at RTE NEWS.

The heading is misleading. Altitude of 12000 feet is not the same as 12000 above ground. The ground is higher at higher altitude. They were probably about 100 feet or so above ground.
