candle-small6The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office confirms that Dr. Paul Kudowitz, 57, died at Englewood Hospital Friday night. Kudowitz was struck and killed by a hit and run driver less then a block from his Allison Court home in Englewood. It happened at 5:45 p.m. on Friday.

Witnesses tell police the car that struck him was a light color, possibly white or tan, SUV or wagon. It may be a Chevrolet.

Police say it definitely has “significant” front end damage.

The victim was carried on the hood of the car for a short distance before he eventually fell off.

Kudowitz was crossing Broad Avenue when he was struck by the vehicle, which was heading south on Broad.

The Cliffview Pilot reports:

Police are looking for a light-colored SUV or wagon with significant front-end damage that kept going after it struck, dragged and killed a 57-year-old physician on his way to synogogue services in Englewood. The vehicle that struck and killed Paul Kudowitz as he was crossing Broad Street at the corner of Allison Street at 5:30 Christmas Eve might be a Chevy, authorities said.

It has only one front headlight, damage to the headlight’s housing and turn signal, and possibly hood dents or windshield cracks, Bergen County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli told authorities told CLIFFVIEW PILOT.

The vehicle dragged Kudowitz — an anesthesiologist and pain management specialist with nearly 30 years of experience. He eventually fell to the ground, and the vehicle roared south on Broad.

“There is significant debris in the roadway,” one investigator said, adding that it will allow investigations to “run some part numbers to narrow down” the vehicle.

Kudowitz, who also worked from an office in Astoria, Queens, was an active member of the Aleh Foundation, which helps disabled children in Israel. He leaves a wife, Ricki, 56, and a daughter, Robyn.

If you have any information about the car or the crash, please call Englewood police immediately: (201) 568-2711.
