[Video below.] A fund has been set up to assist a Lakewood family whose home was severely damaged on Erev Shabbos from a fire.  Checks can be made out to Make checks payable to VOFRF and mailed to Victims of Fire Relief Fund, c/o Rabbi Simcha Bunim Cohen, 37 5th Street, Lakewood, NJ 08701.

The fire at the home on Seventh Street, near Beth Medrash Govoha, damaged the house and spread across the backyard fence. A resident at the house told police that she ran outside after smelling smoke. No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported at 12:19 p.m.  The fire ripped through the rear section of the house and spread across debris and fallen leaves in the backyard to the wooden fence on the property, said fire-lakewood-2Patrolman David Silberstein, who arrived with Capt. Gregory Miick.

The house was gutted by the fire, and flames damaged siding on adjacent homes.

Seventh Street was closed for four hours due to the emergency, and traffic in the area was extremely heavy as yungeleit from Beth Medrash Govoha made their way home after seder. Police cordoned off the site, and people crowded at the edges of the caution tape to watch the action.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. Sgt. Steve Allaire said the fire is being investigated by the Ocean County fire marshal and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office. Detective Thomas D’Elia was also at the scene to investigate.

Southard Fire Department from Howell and Brick fire departments assisted in fighting the fire.
