Gafni: Rav Shach Told Me 3 Words: “Keep the Law ”

moshe-gafniAfter twenty years in the Knesset, Finance Committee chairman MK Moshe Gafni, in the weekend edition of Maariv, gave his first comprehensive personal interview about his personal life, the chareidi public, secular education, and more.

Gafni said in the interview to Maariv that he does not represent only the chareidi public, but the entire general public. “If it’s good for the public, it’s good for the chareidim,” he said.

Gafni commented that when taking office as the Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs, he met with Maran Rav Elazar Menachem Man Shach zt”l and asked what he should do, expecting Rav Shach to tell him to work for funding for yeshivos that are struggling. “He told me three words: Keep the law.”

Gafni related that when he entered the house of Rav Yosef Shalom Elyashiv regularly, the posek hador would always simply be learning. “…he just did not notice [me]. He sat and learned Gemara with dveikus…”
