candleTonight, a gathering for the yahrtzeit of Harav Shraga Moshe Kalmanowitz, rosh hayeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva, will be held at the bais medrash of the Mirrer Yeshiva, located at the corner of Avenue R and Ocean Parkway in Flatbush, Brooklyn. Divrei halacha will be delivered by the rosh hayeshiva, Harav Osher Kalmanowitz, son of Rav Shraga Moshe. Divrei aggada will be delivered by the rosh hayeshiva, Harav Hershel Zolty, son-in-law of Rav Shraga Moshe.

The gathering will begin at 8 p.m. A minyan for Maariv will follow.

In addition to leading the Mirrer Yeshiva, during his lifetime, Rav Shraga Moshe was often found encouraging and assisting students in other New York yeshivos, particularly less-privileged Sephardic and Russian talmidim. Like his father, Harav Avrohom Kalmanowitz, the founding rosh yeshiva of the Mirrer Yeshiva, Rav Shraga Moshe was an activist for Jews oppressed in other countries, particularly Egypt.

Rav Shraga Moshe entered the Mirrer Yeshiva in Poland when he was just ten years old, and later learned in Yeshivas Kamenitz under Rav Boruch Ber Leibowitz. Shortly before the United States entered World War II, Rav Shraga Moshe arrived in the United States, where he learned in Yeshiva Torah Vodaas under Rav Shlomo Heiman and Rav Reuven Grozovsky.

  1. Horav Shraga Moshe Kalmanowitz Zt”l was my beloved rebbe and Rosh HaYeshiva. Not only did he impart in us, his talmidim a thirst and love for Torah, with his erudite scholarship, but he imbued in us through his uncomplicated simplicity phenomenal Ahavas Yisrael. True he was a “father” to the Sefardim – Morrocans in the Yeshiva, which we all apreciated but he loved the Ashkenazim – American boys as well. May he be a meilitz yosher for his dear family, his great Yeshiva and all of Klall Yisrael.
