Gen. Joseph VotelGen. Joseph Votel, head of the U.S. Special Operations Command, told the Aspen Security Forum on Friday that Russia poses the biggest “long-term” threat to the United States.

When asked a question by The Daily Beast’s Kim Dozier about which he considered more dangerous—ISIS or al Qaeda—Votel turned his focus to Moscow.

“Russia could pose an existential threat to the United States,” he said, echoing comments on many of America’s top military officers in recent weeks. Votel’s Special Operations forces have been at the forefront of the fight against Islamic terrorist outfits.

The public role of those forces to stem Russia’s aggression in Ukraine has been limited. But Votel did note that part of the Special Operations Command’s mission was “helping people resist.”
