Andreas Lubitz, the co-pilot of Germanwings Flight 9525, locked the pilot out of the cockpit and intentionally crashed the plane in an act of mass murder, according to Marseille public prosecutor Brice Robin.

“It is intentional,” Robin said in a press conference Thursday, stressing that Lubitz’s actions were “completely voluntary.” No connection to terrorism is seen.

After leaving the cockpit, the pilot is heard on a black-box recording knocking on the door and trying to gain reentry without success, Robin said. The co-pilot also did not respond to calls from a control tower asking him to issue a distress signal.

“We hear human breathing within the cabin and we hear this breathing up until the final point of impact,” Robin said. “We only hear screams at the very end.” Read more.

  1. There should be some sort of way for a co pilot to be able to regain entry to a cockpit if he is locked ou, even in the event that there is no foul play. What if the pilot faints or something ?
