The Gerrer Rebbe visited Chacham Ovadia Yosef today to discuss what should be done to address the efforts to draft yeshiva bochurim into the Israeli army, a perquisite for the Yesh Atid party of Yair Lapid to join the next government coalition.
The meeting also featured the participation of Deputy Health Minister and MK Yaakov Litzman, who represents Ger in Yahadus Hatorah, and Aryeh Deri, chairman of Shas.
Following the meeting between the Rebbe and Chacham Ovadiah, and a private meeting between Deri and Liztman, it was announced that Shas and UTJ will present a uniform position to Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu regarding the “sharing the burden” issue of IDF service for chareidi yeshiva bochurim.
Those close to the parties stated that Shas and UTJ share a common view on this pressing issue and have formed an unbreakable bond – combining the 18 seats they earned for the upcoming Knesset – to stand strong on this matter.
