Newt Gingrich on Wednesday accused GOP presidential rival Mitt Romney of “drowning people in dirt” with a $1.4 million attack-ad blitz less than two weeks before the Iowa caucuses.

He said a new commercial put out by a Romney-supporting super-PAC campaign in the Hawkeye State “contains numerous lies and falsehoods,” The Hill reports.

“I have faith that the people of Iowa can see baloney, they understand baloney, this is baloney. They want the real thing,” Gingrich said.

The ad, paid for by the group Restore Our Future, claims that Gingrich “has more baggage than the airlines.”

It says the former House Speaker took $30,000 an hour from the housing agency Freddie Mac, supported using government funds to pay for abortion and worked with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi on climate change legislation and on funding a U.N. program that “supported China’s brutal one-child program.”

Gingrich hit back saying “defending the right to lie as a candidate is a pretty bad idea,” during an appearance on Laura Ingraham’s radio show. “The Washington Post just gave the newest Romney ad four Pinocchios,” he said referring to the paper’s lowest rating for facts. “Do you know how hard it is to write and run an ad that has four Pinocchios? That means there’s no honesty in the ad, except maybe the tag line.”

“Newt Gingrich has actually balanced the budget, reformed welfare, cut taxes,” he added. “I’m prepared to run a campaign of honesty and a campaign of facts and a campaign of positive ideas.

“We don’t need to replace Obama’s dishonesty with a Republican who is equally dishonest.

“Romney has $1.4 million in negative ads next week in Iowa. Now, that is a level of drowning people in dirt that is an embarrassment to the American system,” Gingrich said.

  1. Obama is so dishonest that he would literally ask you before he eats out of your bag of fritos. I am sure that Mitt Romney would wait till you looked away and sneak a bite.
As for Mr. Gingrich, he would grab your bag of fritos in the direct vision of your gaze and eat them all up. I am sure that is honesty right?

  2. But actually, since the ads were run by a super PAC supporting Romney, Romney himself didn’t have anything to do with them (he couldn’t legally). So which candidate is actually throwing dirt?
