Ginsburg Expresses ‘Regret’ For Remarks Criticizing Trump

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said today that she should not have commented on Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and she regrets her remarks.

In a statement issued by the Supreme Court public information office, Ginsburg said: “On reflection, my recent remarks in response to press inquiries were ill-advised and I regret making them. Judges should avoid commenting on a candidate for public office. In the future I will be more circumspect.”

Last week, Ginsburg crossed traditional lines of judicial restraint by publicly slamming Trump and what his possible presidency would mean for the court.

“I can’t imagine what this place would be – I can’t imagine what the country would be – with Donald Trump as our president,” Ginsburg told The New York Times. “For the country, it could be four years. For the court, it could be – I don’t even want to contemplate that.”

She made similar comments to the Associated Press. On Monday during a CNN interview, Ginsburg called Trump a “faker” and said she was surprised that the media has not pressed him more to release his tax returns.

Trump quickly fired back, saying in a tweet that the 83-year-old justice should resign and that her mind was “shot.”

The court – now at eight members after the death of Antonin Scalia in February – is a major issue in the presidential race, with both Republicans and Democrats saying the appointment of the next justice could have a significant impact on future rulings.

There was little precedent for Ginsburg’s comments.

Then-Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was criticized by some in 2000 after Newsweek quoted her as saying, “This is terrible,” at an election-night watch party after Florida was prematurely called for Al Gore. Some argued that she should have recused herself from the ensuing Bush v. Gore case before the Supreme Court.

  1. Ms Ruth: just saying you “regret” your remarks won’t cut it, i’m afraid—-you already SAID it and the damage was done! that’s like regretting “spilling milk” on the floor. just “regretting” spilling the milk without cleaning it up won’t clean the floor. if you really and truly want to display “regret”, make an appointmnt with Mr Trump and apologize in his face and only then will you have a good chance of cleaning up your mess!

  2. Too little / too late.

This Amah Ha’aretz created a massive Chillul HaShem. She should have learned some Derech Eretz in law school.

  3. It shouldn’t have taken her several days to finally acknowledge her severe error in judgment for which she’s been rightfully been criticized from both left and right-leaning pundits.
The Supreme Court should not be involved in partisan politics and had any member criticized Hillary Clinton he or she would have been equally wrong. Of course many decisions and opinions are politicized – Roe v. Wade being the most obvious – but a matter of legal opinion is fine to discuss; actually it’s enlightening and insightful to learn what facts, precedents, interpretations and so on a particular Supreme used to arrive at an opinion.

  4. This rodent has shown the entire Nation how corrupt and biased she really is. Its high time for her to join Joe Biden at the dog track. If she hurries, she can still get the free matinee lunch.
