legoA 7-year-old girl recently wrote a letter to the maker of LEGO complaining about gender stereotypes, and after the note went viral, the toy company took notice.

Little Charlotte Benjamin was frustrated after a recent trip to the toy store because although she loves LEGO blocks, “there are more LEGO boy people and barely any LEGO girls.” She wrote a letter to the toy company last month asking if it can “make more LEGO girl people and let them go on adventures and have fun OK!?! ”

Charlotte’s proud dad decided to send the letter to The Society Pages website, which shared the plucky inquiry on social media where it was re-posted thousands of times, the Independent reported.

The letter asked the company why the only thing the LEGO girl action figures did was “sit at home, go to the beach, and shop, and had no jobs,” while the boy figures “went on adventures, worked, saved people, and had jobs,” adding they “even swam with sharks.”

  1. …and the only thing girls who play with LEGO do is kvetch to the company about how the toy doesn’t “do” what she wants it to do, in fantasy world.

  2. The shape of figurines is identical. For all we care, she can have her female LEGOs get jobs as truck operators, paramedics and diving instructors and have male LEGOs cooking dinner. The only stereotype I notice in the story is a young lady playing in the most un-creative way ever imagined – and whining about it.

  3. I am surprised that Obama has not yet added in his $.02 cents about the LEGO “inequality” in this country.

Perhaps he missed his golden opportunity at the State of the Union speech. Obama could have invited the LEGO pieces in question to be in the Gallery!
