giulianiFormer Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin was understandably upset by efforts to tie her to the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.), but should not have described such claims as a “blood libel,” former New York Gov. Rudy Giuliani suggested on Sunday.”The facts and circumstances show that this had nothing to do with the left or the right. It had nothing to do with any map that Sarah Palin had,” Giuliani said on CBS’s “Face The Nation.” “She used a wrong word in responding to it, but I can see why she would feel very upset.”

Giuliani did not say specifically which part of Palin’s statement he considered a “wrong word,” but he appeared to be her remark that suggestions that her rhetoric and a rifle-sight graphic her website used to mark Giffords’s district amounted to a “blood libel.”

That term is more commonly used to refer to anti-Semitic claims that Jews used the blood of Christian children in religious rituals. It is a story that has followed Jews through the centuries, dating back to the Middle Ages and lasting through the present day in the Arab world.

Both Giuliani and Palin are considered possible candidates for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012. Elsewhere in the CBS interview, Giuliani confirmed that he’s been considering making another bid for the White House.

  1. There was absolutely nothing wrong with Sara Palin using the expression “blood libel” to defend herself. Anyone who says otherwise is just looking for publicity on Palin’s account and is simply pandering.
