Dangerously cold weather had much of the United States in its grip early this morning, with no relief in sight for the rest of the week. In Minneapolis, Minnesota, the temperature was -3 degrees as today began, and with the wind chill, it felt like -17 degrees. By Thursday, the high is forecast to be only 4 degrees.
While the upper Midwest is accustomed to frigid weather, freezing temperatures can come as a shock in Florida.
The Panhandle and much of northern Florida is under a hard freeze warning, the National Weather Service says. The warning extended almost down to Tampa Bay along the Gulf Coast.
Florida officials have been urging residents, visitors and agricultural interests to prepare for temperatures near or below the freezing mark this week, CNN affiliate WESH reports.
Along with the dangerously cold temperatures, residents in Montana have been warned by the Weather Service to brace for blizzard conditions with snowfall of 12 to 20 inches possible across parts of the state.
In Chicago, Illinois, residents bundled up on another bitterly cold day and many stayed indoors, CNN affiliate WLS reports.
Early this morning, the temperature in Chicago was 9 degrees with light snow, WLS reported. By Shabbos, the forecast high is only 8 degrees.
In the Northeast, the Weather Service warned that a large storm off the New England coast would continue to bring heavy snow to much of central New York state.

This article is misleading. It is full of anecdotal evidence. If I understand correctly, the point of this article is that “It’s cold in the winter” and therefore there must not be climate change.
A couple points:
Climate and weather are two different things. It can be colder (even record cold) and the climate can still be heating. Indeed, objective scientific observations have shown this to be the case. Some years might be colder, but the general trend is towards warming, and it is very clear.
Nobody has said that the change is going to be immediate or so drastic that it’s going to feel like summer in the winter. OF COURSE it’s going to be cold in the winter. This is the most obvious thing in the world.

where do you get “objective scientific observations”?
scientists twist scientific evidence to prove their point. These scientists with their impressive degrees know how to make impressive computor models of evolution and global warming and the naive public swallows their words hook line and sinker until we get record cold temperatures or you have computor hackers uncovering the truth that they tried to hide from themselves and the public.
They have an agenda to sell. Because I’m frum I don’t buy their evolution theory and because I’m not naive I don’t buy their global warming theory.
By the way, I do feel that the natural resources Hashem gave us should be used in a responsible manner and conserved as much as reasonably possible. We need to do hishtadlus and Hashem will take care of the rest. The wolrd is in the hands of Hashem, not these foolish scientists who think the world will collapse if they don’t do anything to “save the planet”.
The issue is not whether or not the planet is warming, but whether or not humans are responsible.
Humans contribute less than 0.01% (that’s one one-hundredth of one percent) of the total energy the planet absorbs, so it is not likely that we are the cause of global warming. All the talk about carbon footprints and caps, is pure politics.
And, oh by the way, the icecaps on Mars are also melting.

Take a look at a graph of average temperature by year over the last 100 years. It’s a very clear trend. (A quick search for “overall climate change graph” should come up with some results for you.)
In the 20th century, the average surface temperature of the world has increased by 1.2 to 1.4°F.
By the way, I can provide anecdotal evidence like this article does (like how the 8 warmest years in recorded history have occurred between 1998 and now.) But the important thing isn’t the individual years, it’s the overall rise in temperature. Some years will be warmer or colder than others, but a large and clear trend such as what we are observing cannot be overlooked.
My point is that you cannot draw conclusions from a few data points. When you combine all the data together, the average temperature has steadily risen. This is a fact.

Besides, it’s not about energy absorbed, it’s about trapping that energy. The CO2 we emit “clogs” up the atmosphere trapping more energy here on Earth. We want a balance with our atmosphere where it will trap enough energy so that our winters are bearable and temperatures remain fairly constant (compared to other planets, the difference of 70 degrees from winter to summer is nothing.) At the same time, we don’t want it to trap too much energy on the planet or else the temperature swill rise and will greatly effect our ecosystem.
