America’s top diplomat drew a flurry of ire and scorn in response to a Hanukkah greeting he tweeted on Shabbos, less than 24 hours after the US allowed an anti-Israeli settlement UN Security Council resolution to pass.

“Happy Hanukkah!” Secretary of State John Kerry said in the tweet. “May the lights of the menorah brighten your home and the year ahead. From my family to yours, Chag Sameach.”

Happy ! May the lights of the menorah brighten your home and the year ahead. From my family to yours, Chag Sameach.

With many Jews and other members of the pro-Israel community still smarting from the Obama administration’s abstention from the vote on the resolution — which, among other things, deemed Israeli communities in the West Bank and East Jerusalem to be illegal — a fiery backlash to Kerry’s tweet was quick to come.

“Seriously? Go choke on a latke,” international human rights lawyer and freelance journalist Arsen Ostrovsky fumed.

Loren Sykes tweeted, “Your holiday greetings are neither needed nor welcome. Your support at the UN was needed & you failed to provide it.”

Israeli political analyst Jeremy Saltan chimed in, “With all due respect, this is the wrong day to wish us a Happy Hanukkah.”

@JohnKerry With all due respect, this is the wrong day to wish us a Happy

Journalist Lori Lowenthal Marcus also called out Kerry, saying, “You dimmed many lights, but we hope for the last time. Please let the door hit u on the way out.”

.@JohnKerry You dimmed many lights, but we hope for the last time. Please let the door hit u on the way out.

And pro-Israel activist Chloé Simone Valdary replied to Kerry with a simple, “Bruh.”

A Chanukah greeting posted by the White House on Twitter on Shabbos also attracted a slew of responses critical of the Obama administration’s decision to not thwart the approval of Friday’s Security Council resolution.

  1. Leave Mr. Kerry alone–He is the messenger- We need to do complete repentance ASAP. After that all our enemies will disappear. The option of negative remarks is much easier then repentance.

  2. When will people learn to stop tcheppering influential goyim? America is giving the medinah $3.5 billion dollars in aid and access to the most advanced weaponry. Lets cool down the rhetoric! Yes, we are all angry at Obama but there is nothing to be gained by being nasty. Lets keep calm, daven and look forward to Trump…

    • America gives Israel such a huge budget for a reason. If i am not mistaken this time the budget must generally spent only on American military equipment or trying to phase out half the budget being spent on non American equipment. So in essence it is subsidy that goes right back to american companies! The exception to the funding might be the missile program it might get some of that funding. (Or also some other Military Research projects??)

But again think of Israel as a research facility for military technology. The US government knows Israel is good at making advancements in pioneering military research so in essence its in the best interest of both parties for Israel to have necessary funding to work towards new technologies which America can take advantage of.

And another reason is essentially America knows Israel can be relied upon as a stable military entity in the region. It is unlikely that Israel would have a revolution unlike most of the other countries in the region. If the Saudis have a revolution their goes the air bases america relies or relied on. Also if America needs it in a case of emergency Israel can be relied upon with its Air Force and full Military in General etc. to Project American Sovereignty against Americas enemies.

  3. Obama and Kerry ( a Silver Star awardee for his purported bravery in Vietnam who threw away his medals when he returned home) epitomize the post Vietnam mood that everything that the US does is wrong including its past support and assistance to Israel. It is the john Lennon school of foreign policy in real life

  4. 1041 pm: America gives Israel lots of money. The American taxpayer. Not Obama. He’d get rid of it all if he could. Our role is to cozy up to the American people bichlal, and the leadership bifrat, to the extent that the leadership can help us. If they try to harm us, it’s our duty to slam them. They need to know the political consequences of anti-Semitism.
