Sen. Mark Kirk on Wednesday became the first prominent Republican to effectively unendorse Donald Trump for president.

“I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee for president,” the Illinois-based lawmaker told the AP. Last month, when asked if he’d support Trump in the general election, Kirk said, “Certainly, if he’s the nominee.”

The senator also tweeted: “Given my military experience, Donald Trump does not have the temperament to command our military or our nuclear arsenal.” The GOP senator is currently in the midst of a tough re-election race, in which he trails his challenger, Democratic Rep. Tammy Duckworth.

  1. Although I am not a Trump supporter, I think it is important to understand his comments in their proper context. Donald trump did not say that every judge of Mexican descent MUST be biased against him for his views on immigration. He merely said that THIS judge has been ruling so consistently against him on every motion that it appears that his judgement is impaired. (This is not an impossibility. Federal judges are notorious for outrageous rulings.)

Mr. Trump has pondered the source of this possible animus of the judge against him. He was speculating that a source of THIS judge’s bias might be his opposition to Mr. Trump’s outspoken policies.

This would be akin to suggesting that a specific WASP judge might hold with certain anti-Semitic points of view, and it might cloud his judgement, but that doesn’t mean that every non-Jewish judge is without a doubt biased against Jews. For example, if my electricity is shut off due to non-payment, that has nothing to do with antisemitism. But if a non-Jewish judge would rule against Alan Dershowitz each and every time he opens his mouth, it is not inconceivable that the judge harbors personal animosity towards Jews.

Finally, If Judge Curiel were to turn and find for Mr. Trump on every motion, I’m sure that Mr. Trump would claim that it an indication of how much he is loved by Americans of Mexican descent.
