Neil M. Gorsuch was sworn in this morning as the newest Supreme Court justice, taking the constitutional oath administered by Chief Justice John Roberts before taking part in a ceremonial swearing-in at the White House. The other eight justices were in attendance at the Supreme Court building in Washington, in addition to the widow and son of Justice Antonin Scalia, who passed away last year.

The second oath was administered by Justice Anthony Kennedy in the White House Rose Garden. President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence were in attendance. Gorsuch, 49, was confirmed by the U.S. Senate last week, 54-45. Three red-state Democrats voted for Gorsuch, but others called the seat “stolen” because the Republican-controlled Senate did not allow President Barack Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, to have a hearing last year.
