With weeks or days to go before a grand jury announces its decision whether or not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for killing Michael Brown, the governor of Missouri addressed preparations for potential civil unrest.
“Violence will not be tolerated,” Gov. Jay Nixon said. State and local law enforcement will work under unified command, he said, adding that the National Guard will be available to support them if necessary. “This is America. People have the right to express their grievances but they do not have the right to put their property or rights at risk.”
Nixon said that in recent weeks, law enforcement have received more than 5,000 hours of specialized training with an emphasis on protecting demonstrators’ constitutional rights.
