Greenfield to NYPD: Throw the Book at Perps Arrested for Midwood Knockout Attack

nypdBrooklyn – In light of the most recent ‘knockout’ attack in Brooklyn, during which another Jewish victim was attacked by a group of four individuals last night, Councilman David G. Greenfield is demanding that the NYPD and District Attorney charge all four suspects with felonies for participating in a gang assault and a hate crime. The Jewish male victim was walking home at around 2 a.m. last night in the vicinity of 18th Avenue and East 5th Street in Midwood when he was approached by four adult males and suddenly punched in the head in an attempt to knock him out. As in other similar local ‘knockout’ incidents in recent weeks targeting Jewish individuals of all ages, nothing was taken during this senseless attack. This marks at least the fourth such incident in Midwood and Crown Heights since the beginning of November, with victims ranging from a 12-year-old boy to a 78-year-old woman who was attacked while walking home from shopping.

“I am sickened to hear of yet another cowardly attack on an innocent person who was just trying to get home after work. I applaud the efforts of the NYPD and Shomrim to increase their presence in Crown Heights and Midwood, and the NYPD’s great work in making an immediate arrest in last night’s anti-Semitic attack. It is now time for the NYPD and District Attorney to throw the book at these thugs and make it clear that our city will not tolerate this type of behavior, especially when people are being targeted because of their race or religion,” said Councilman Greenfield.

In response to the initial incidents, Councilman Greenfield has partnered with Public Advocate-elect Letitia James and Councilman-elect Chaim Deutsch to offer a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in any of the incidents that have occurred so far in Brooklyn.

In addition, Councilman Greenfield met with community leaders, elected officials and NYPD brass on Tuesday to discuss the city’s response to the attacks and the efforts to prevent more from occurring. He is reminding all local residents to remain vigilant, report any suspicious activity to the police and when possible to avoid walking home alone at night.

“We must make it clear that this twisted nationwide trend will not be tolerated on the streets of New York City and those responsible will be held fully accountable for the serious assaults they are committing for no reason. I will continue to work closely with the NYPD and the District Attorney’s office until it is clear that we have put an end to these outrageous attacks,” added Councilman Greenfield.
