beerFrom the Odd News Department: An ambitious group of drinkers set a new Guinness World Record yesterday by boozing their way through Manhattan. Forget pub crawls, this was an all-out marathon: The “Thirsty 13” hit 200 bars – and counting at press time – in 10 hours, breaking the previous record for “Most Pubs Visited in 24 Hours by a Team.”

The previous record was 170 bars, set by a group in Chicago. To beat that, the New York group had one member drink a half pint at each establishment.

Each beverage was signed for by the bartender and documented on a camera to show it was legit.

The new champs – if and when they are deemed the winners by the Guinness World Records folks – started at 8:45 a.m. Saturday at O’Hanlon’s Pub on 14th St., armed with a load of fives and singles, matching T-shirts and a Twitter account.

They bar-hopped pizza joints, sake bars, European bistros and everything in between.

Just after 6 p.m. the group bellied up at Solas on E. 9th St. so group leaders Chris Solarz and Bea Reig could celebrate their three-year wedding anniversary.

“It’s a real blessing to have friends like this,” said Solarz, a 33-year-old hedge fund analyst and endurance athlete who also holds records for navigating the subway, climbing and marathon running.

“Some people have real problems. I’m worried about getting to the next bar on time.”

  1. Open-minded as I am, for the very life of me I cannot see the relevance of this report to the ethos of this website.

Perhaps someone else will enlighten me, please?

  2. Guinness also documents women with beards and people who pull trucks with their teeth. Why don’t we have an article about that? Honest;y, Matzav can do better.
