halachic dinnerNew York – An Upper West Side halachic dinner served exotic kosher foods like poached brains and chocolate covered locusts that left many of the gourmands in attendance with food poisoning after the May 5 gala, the NY Daily News reports.

“We’re currently investigating and working with the synagogue,” city Health Department spokesman Christopher Miller said.

The event at Congregation Shearith Israel was hosted by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik, attracting about 225 people who enjoyed chicken gizzards, goat tagine, and dates to veal intestines.

Admission was $100.

But at least two dozen attendees have gotten sick. One of them, the News reported, tested positive for campylobacter, a bacteria associated with raw or uncooked poultry, unpasteurized dairy products or contaminated water, poultry or produce.

The city’s Health Department is investigating.
