Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, died Friday at age 89, AL.com reports. Multiple sources in Lee’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, confirmed her death to the website. Lee won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1961 for the book, which achieved worldwide acclaim, and became a popular film in 1962, starring Gregory Peck and Mary Badham. She wrote the novel in 1949 while working as an airline reservation desk clerk in New York, It wasn’t until 1957 that she submitted her manuscript for Mockingbird to J.B. Lippincott & Co., who published it three years later.

Lee was famously reclusive for much of her life, and after suffering a stroke in 2007, she spent her remaining years in Monroeville, eventually taking care of her sick sister, Alice. Lee’s second book, Go Set a Watchman, was published in July 2015. The sort-of sequel to Mockingbird, Watchman was received with mixed reviews, a fact that is largely attributed to Lee’s second book turning Atticus—her courageous, wise and beloved protagonist—into a white supremacist. Read more at AL.com.

  1. “To Kill A Mockingbird” is one of the most important American pieces of literature from the twentieth century. Just like “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” focused the evil of slavery in the nineteenth century, “To Kill A Mockingbird” shone a harsh light on racism and its consequences in the twentieth.

  2. Big news yeshiva kids (above angry swarm). I would assure you that an American heroic author is worth a jewish comment. If we know the way that America exists, we can be assured that G-d will help us find a good fate in our own day based on our own interest in our community and neighbors in the marketplace and in the forum we may visit in our days.

Harper Lee though I have yet to read her books is quite an icon. She stood for equal rights in a society that was once antisemitic as well. The changes she can bring to the youth might be some of the reason you might find jobs today and you might not have such a hard day in your commerce or work.

Still, be glad she existed. Her last book that was controversial might still be interesting and her work was not a world of poverty. Judging on some of the poor comments on all of the jewish web sites, we might learn from Harper Lee. She wrote better than half of our posting yidden speak.

And if you use this story to find her book and read it or give it to your child, you probably did not go wrong. Good classes in many schools think she is special.

Goodbye to a good author. I have yet to read the book but it was purchased. B’DE
