hotAs thousands kick back and enjoy the holiday weekend, they’re bracing for soaring temperatures. An early summer heat-wave is bearing down on the Big Apple.

Independence Day will usher in the first of a string of over 90-degree temperature days.

For those who can’t be near the water to cool off, health experts are issuing a warning. The hazy humid days will sap energy quickly, so they advise wearing light, loose clothing and drinking plenty of water.

Doctors say steer clear of caffeine and alcohol. “It kind of dulls your senses so you may not feel the heat and actually may develop heat exhaustion because you have the alcohol on board and you’re not feeling as warm as you would,” said Dr. Tod Bania of St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital.

The blazing temps will also put a strain on the power grids. Con Ed is preparing for power outages but is asking customers to do their part by closing the curtains or blinds to block out sunlight, turning off appliances when not in use, using large appliances at night when its cooler, and setting the thermostats to 78 degrees.

“We’re going to be working around the clock to make sure any outages that do occur are small in size, contained and in short  duration,” said Michael Clendenin of Con Ed.
