herman_cainRepublican presidential hopeful Herman Cain said today that US communities that want to ban mosques have a right to do so, as he backed opponents of a mosque being built in Tennessee.

“Islam is both a religion and a set of laws — Sharia laws. That’s the difference between any one of our traditional religions where it’s just about religious purposes,” Cain told Fox News Sunday.

Asked whether a community, like the one in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, should be able to “ban a mosque,” Cain replied: “Yes, they have the right to do that.”

Cain, who once ran the Godfather’s Pizza chain, insisted his position on the mosque in Murfreesboro, which has faced legal challenges from community leaders, was “not discriminating based upon their particular religion.”

The 65-year-old businessman, who has never held public office and has staked out hard conservative positions in a bid to stand out from a crowded Republican field of candidates, added he was “willing to take a harder look at people who might be terrorists.”

An African-American, Cain said his position did not conflict with the prejudice he may have experienced growing up in the United States in 1950s and 1960s.

“Look, I know that there’s a peaceful group of Muslims in this country. God bless them and they’re free to worship.

“If you look at my career, I have never discriminated against anybody because of their religion, their sex, or origin, or anything like that,” he said.

“I’m simply saying I owe it to the American people to be cautious because terrorists are trying to kill us,” he added. “And so yes I’m going to err on the side of caution rather than on the side of carelessness.”

Cain was also an executive at Coca-Cola, Pillsbury and Burger King, and has served as chairman, president and chief executive of the National Restaurant Association.

He hosts “The Herman Cain Show” out of Atlanta and has been a fixture at rallies organized by the ultra-conservative tea party.

  1. this is dangerous. take the word mosque and replace it “synogogue” and see how it sounds.
i feel that a specific location (like ground zero)can be barred do to sensitivities, but we can’t ban all mosques.

  2. Judaism is also a set of laws. While I appreciate many of Cain’s positions, I often find him to be simply uninformed.

  3. I just watched the Cain clip from Fox News Sunday. I’m sorry, as much as I wish what Cain said was constitutional, coherent and not self-contradictory, unfortunately, it’s none of those things.

  4. To #2 –
We don’t preach terrorism from our synagogues.

    To #3 –
We beleive that the “law of the land is the law” (Dina malchuta dina) while we have our civil laws. We try to make them work together. We are not trying to supplant American law as some muslim communities do.

  5. The more he speaks, the more he exposes his ignorance. Allowing mosques to be built is not “careless,” it’s protecting the constitutional rights that have afforded our community the strongest freedoms and protection that we have had at any point in the diaspora.

  6. Well done #1? Do you really think the average middle-American would see any difference between Sharia Law and a Beis Din?

  7. Are you kidding, this guy is 100% right , jews are not a threat and everyone knows that, he is basically saying listen i know most muslims aren’t terrorist but aren’t most terrorist muslim?(if not all)…in the nicest and cleanest way he can say it in without being attacked.
If this guy doesn’t actually win the GOP bid, i wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up being on the ticket as the vice president.

  8. This is dangerous. Today the Muslims are hated, tommorow it could be us. We should support a tolerant America in which any law abiding group of people is free to practice their religion.

  9. Yeah #1 and #13…I’m pretty sure that this is STILL America, and that there is still FREEDOM OF RELIGION here. This is absolutely absurd and disgusting. You can cheer now for the garbage that Cain is spewing, and go on “banning” Mosques but then what? You just wait for when America turns on the Jews just like they did in Europe. I hope you’ll have your passports ready and some cash set aside you you’ll be able to get a plane ticket out of here…
