Zionist Union leader Isaac Herzog, who is Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Likud party’s most formidable opponent in Tuesday’s Israeli Knesset election, on Monday vowed to be a “prime minister to everyone” if he assumes that role.
Herzog said he would be a leader “for right and left, for settlers, haredim, Druze, Arabs, Circassians.”
“I will be prime minister for the center and for the periphery, for students and senior citizens,” he said.
Herzog has been endorsed for prime minister by former Israeli president Shimon Peres and former prime minister Ehud Barak.
“Israel’s citizens can trust him to deal with any security challenge,” said Barak, Yedioth Ahronoth reported. “Isaac Herzog is a level-headed, experienced and responsible man. I worked closely with him when I led the government.”
“I have known Herzog and his family for many years, I’ve seen him up close filling senior positions with excellence and taking part in debates and decisions that have great importance to Israel’s future,” Peres said last week.
