Hillary Clinton acknowledged that she had committed a major mistake when she described half of Donald Trump’s supporters as “deplorables,” according to a New York Times report.
Clinton reportedly admitted to the error immediately after making the remarks at a New York fundraiser in September, telling an adviser she “just stepped in it.”
Trump used the remark to his advantage on the campaign trail, and his supporters started calling themselves proud “deplorables” in a rebuke of Clinton’s characterization of them. Strategists on both the left and the right had said the comment was ill-advised, as it alienated and riled up the electorate while generalizing about them as racists, misogynists, and xenophobes.
