hillarySecretary of State Hillary Clinton says in a new interview that she can’t stand “whining” by women who are unhappy with the work and family choices they’ve made in life and complain that they have no options.

Clinton, in the interview with Marie Claire, was discussing Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former director of policy planning at the State Department who left in 2011. This summer, Slaughter wrote a much-discussed cover story in the Atlantic – “Why Women Still Can’t Have It all” – about leaving her job because of the difficulty of balancing her work at State with the needs of her two teenage boys.

“I can’t stand whining,” Clinton told Marie Claire. “I can’t stand the kind of paralysis that some people fall into because they’re not happy with the choices they’ve made. You live in a time when there are endless choices. … Money certainly helps, and having that kind of financial privilege goes a long way, but you don’t even have to have money for it. But you have to work on yourself. … Do something!”

Clinton added, “Some women are not comfortable working at the pace and intensity you have to work at in these jobs. … Other women don’t break a sweat. …They have four or five, six kids. They’re highly organized, they have very supportive networks.”

Lea Goldman, director of features and special projects at Marie Claire, clarified in a statement that the “whining” comment wasn’t targeted at Slaughter.

“We are thrilled that Secretary of State Clinton was able to reflect on her time in office with us, weighing in on work-life balance, obviously a core issue for many American women-and certainly of avid interest to Marie Claire’s readers,” Goldman said. “We want to make it clear that Secretary Clinton’s specific comments about ‘whining’ were not in reference to Anne-Marie Slaughter but, as noted in the story, part of a larger conversation about women in the workplace and striking a work-life balance.”

Clinton wasn’t totally unsympathetic toward issues raised by her former employee. “It’s important for our workplaces … to be more flexible and creative in enabling women to continue to do high-stress jobs while caring for not only children but [also] aging parents,” Clinton said.

Slaughter, who is now a professor at Princeton University, responded via Twitter Thursday afternoon.

“Hillary Clinton, for whom I have the greatest admiration and loyalty, was not talking about me when she mentioned whining,” she tweeted, adding #anything4astory.

In the Marie Claire interview, Clinton also said once again that she has no desire to run for president in 2016.

  1. Hillary used her husband’s coattails to reach a position of influence, and then accomplished nothing of value as Senator or Secretary of State. Why should she whine after getting rich off us?

  2. I’ve worked with an awful lot of women and never heard “whining” about their lot in life. I think women feel pretty empowered these days, but apparently Hillary doesn’t.

Question: Why is the message “I can’t stand whining,” Clinton told Marie Claire.

…well, why is this comment directed at women and not blacks? What would happen if it were?

  3. Hillary, did not live the life “most” women live. Women should not “whine” but many women have many good reasons to complain! Shame on her for NOT recognizing that. It is NOT easy to balance a job or a high power job while raising a family. That is of course unless you DO have the proper support of a caring and considerate husband at home, a good housekeeper, and extended family. NOT everyone is lucky enough to have that. In addition many women find themselves in those high powered jobs because they need to bring home the “bacon” so to speak and not because they “made that choice” and they don’t have the backup support, nor did they choose the job over family which was already in place unlike Hilary who chose to only have one child.

  4. Either you are a parent, or you are a “High Demand Main-Stream Worker.” Uneducated Drivel from women whose hormones are speaking rather than their brains will not change this.

Society is structured such that the Full-Time One Parent / Part-Time Other parent is the best combination. Regardless of which parent brings the baby to term, one parent is going to be “bringing home the bacon.” (Yes, you can have two-part times… but only if you are very good with your finances.)

Now, a main-stream job; the “feminist lust jobs;” are typically run by people who are DEDICATED to the job. Slaughter is dedicated to her family, the job just provides money (and political platform.)

She can misquote or use partial quotes from as many “off topic” refrences as she wants, it will not change that you do not get to the top by asking for time off.

She can either choose to “be empowered” or “raise a family;” BOTH are full-time jobs.
