A staggering $53 million worth of jewelry was stolen today from the Carlton Intercontinental Hotel in Cannes. Police have described the heist as one of the largest in recent memory as thieves made off with diamonds and other gems on display at an exhibit at the hotel.

Experts say the robbery could be a sign that the notorious Pink Panther jewel thief gang is back in operation.

A rash of jewel thefts have recently taken place across Europe. Earlier this year, close to $4 million worth of jewelry was stolen from Cannes during the city’s world renowned film festival. In February, about $50 million in diamonds were stolen in Belgium. Read more at USA Today.
