Hoboken Mayor to Resign Due to Corruption Case

cammaranoA spokesman for New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine says Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano III will resign soon.Corzine spokesman Robert Corrales says Cammarano’s lawyers told the governor’s office today that the 32-year-old rising Democratic Party star would step down within 24 hours. Cammarano lawyer Joseph Hayden says his client will “render a decision” Friday. He would not elaborate.Cammarano was arrested in last week’s federal corruption sting. He would become the second elected official to resign since the arrests.

Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell stepped down Tuesday.

Cammarano faced increasing pressure to resign from Hoboken residents protesting outside his home and City Hall office, and the governor, who urged all six elected officials charged in the case to leave office.
