102-year-old Holocaust survivor Eliahu Pietruszka recently met a 66-year-old nephew he never heard of until recently.

Eliahu fled Warsaw in 1939 and thought his whole family had perished. But recently, a relative in Canada discovered testimony to Eliahu’s death in Yad Vashem’s database. It had been filled out by Eliahu’s long lost brother Volf, thought by Eliahu to have died in a Siberian labor camp. Each brother thought the other had perished.
Volf had died in 2011, but his son, Alexandre, traveled from Magnitogorsk in the Russian Ural Mountains to meet his long-lost uncle at a tearful reunion in Kfar Saba, Israel.

Yad Vashem’s database of three million Holocaust victims has helped many people trace lost relatives.
