As part of Israel’s annual National Home Front Drill, the IDF “evacuated” 140,000 citizens yesterday, Tuesday, June 2, from sensitive areas around the country.

The purpose of the five-day drill, which involves the Home Front Command, Israel Police, Magen David Adom, government ministries and local authorities, is to test the population’s readiness to respond to a potential rocket attack.

The IDF stressed that the drill, which comes at a moment of escalating tension along Israel’s border with Lebanon, was routine. “The purpose of the drill is to maintain the readiness of our forces, and should not be seen as representing any change in Israel’s level of readiness,” an IDF spokesperson said in a statement released to the press.

As part of the drill, codenamed “Turning Point,” the IDF Northern Command and Israel Air Force carried out a series of exercises centering on Home Front security. Over the course of the day, sirens sounded twice in cities throughout the country.
