Google has effectively turned millions of its users’ smartphones into listening devices that can capture intimate conversations – even when they aren’t in the room.

Google says it only turns on and begins recording when you utter the words “OK Google”. But a Sun investigation has found that the virtual assistant is a little hard of hearing. In some cases, just saying “OK” in conversation prompted it to switch on your phone and record around 20 seconds of audio.

Once Google is done recording, it uploads the audio files to its computer servers. To listen back to the audio Google has recorded from my phone, sign into your Gmail account and go to “history.google.com/history.” into your web browser and find the section titled Voice & Audio activity. Once there, there is an option that allows you to turn the setting which records to pause. Read more at The Sun.

  1. First they put everyone’s home on googlmaps for anyone to see, and now they are listening to conversations? What gives them the right to do this? (Besides spying on on your e mails if you use gmail)

  2. Has anyone thought of those new boxes in your home that you talk to and how they advertise that you just tell it what you want and it does it, is also listening to the entire house hold all day long. Has anyone thought of what you say all day long is recorded in those boxes can be hacked or used by providers for other uses then to serve you.
People think about it, there was a book and movie called 1984 where the TV saw and heard the household 24 hours, can those boxes in your house do the same thing??? Do you now think those boxes are fun to use???
