huckabeeMike Huckabee, the former Arkansas governor and presidential candidate, said yesterday that President Barack Obama should declare the release of Jonathan Pollard during his upcoming visit to Israel.

Huckabee, who was leading a group of 200 Christian evangelicals in Israel, told the press that releasing Pollard and announcing it in Israel “would be cathartic moment in the relationship between Israel and the United States,” and indicate an “extraordinary sense of goodwill” on the part of the US.

“I don’t think there is a price to be paid politically for the president in the United States for that, but there would be enormous benefit in terms of relationship with Israelis for him to make that announcement just prior to his coming, or even while he is here,” he remarked.

It seems highly unlikely, however, that Pollard will be released. A concerted campaign to procure him a pardon has been underway for a decade and is supported by many senior officials in the American political establishment and intelligence community; yet it has born no fruit.

Observers believe that powerful officials in the CIA and other intelligence agencies are categorically opposed to releasing Pollard, and without their consent a pardon will never happen.

Pollard is serving a life sentence in federal prison for espionage. He has been in poor health for some time, and many supporters fear that he likely to die in prison.

  1. Pollards release is not crucial to International Agenda. And no he should not go to Israel to give them a surprise from the jungle of American incarceration.

  2. Sad article! Sad truth!
Perhaps if Mike Huckabee would personally contact the prez and suggest it, maybe, just maybe! Maybe it’s an idea that he might consider as a good will gesture to gain him in the friendships he’s trying to develop in this trip!

BTW Matzav editor, the born as it’s used here ought be spelled ‘borne.’
