Amnesty International released a report today, Thursday, accusing the IDF and Israeli police of being “Trigger-happy,” using “reckless force in the West Bank.”

“Israeli forces have displayed a callous disregard for human life by killing dozens of Palestinian civilians, including children, in the occupied West Bank over the past three years with near total impunity,” the Amnesty report alleged.

The IDF in response stated that the report was lacking and exhibited a misunderstanding of the reality on the ground: “The report… ignores the substantial increase in Palestinian violence initiated over the past year, and shows a complete lack of understanding as to operational challenges the IDF faces.”

2013 saw a sharp increase in rock throwing incidents by Palestinians, gravely jeopardizing the lives of civilians and military personnel. 132 Israelis were injured during the past year alone, almost double the number in 2012. In total, over 5,000 incidents of rock throwing took place, half of which were along main routes. The IDF further foiled 66 terror attacks in 2013, included shootings, the planting of IEDs, blunt weapon attacks and attempts to abduct and murder a soldier.

In a statement the IDF said that: “The IDF operates in Judea and Samaria in order to contain violence initiated by Palestinians. When feasible, the IDF contains this life-threatening violence using riot dispersal means, including loud sirens, water cannons, sound grenades and tear gas. Only once IDF forces exhaust these tools and human life and safety remains in danger, is the use of precision munitions authorized. The IDF holds itself to the highest of professional standards and trains and equips itself as such. When there is any suspicion of wrong doing, or breach of discipline, the IDF reviews, investigates and takes action where appropriate.”
