rand-paulIn his first visit to Israel, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul is calling for a gradual reduction of American foreign aid, the AP reports.

It’s an unlikely place to deliver the message, since Israel is among the largest recipients of American assistance, but Paul said in a  meeting with reporters today that the U.S. can’t afford to keep sending money overseas, even to allies like Israel. He says it would be “harder to be a friend of Israel if we are out of money.”

The Kentucky Republican, a longtime opponent of foreign aid, acknowledges he’s expressing a “minority opinion” and doubts Congress will cut aid. He insists Washington should first cut aid to countries with strained ties to America, such as Pakistan and Egypt.

Israel gets about $3 billion a year in military aid.

  1. I should preface by saying I am not a zionist, but just stating a historical quote, but Rabbi Meir Kahane Hyd used to say it is not accurate to call the 5th of Iyar “Independence Day” as long as Israel is dependent upon American money. The real zionists are against foreign aid, so Sen. Paul is not anti Israel at all. (and for most non-Jews that is a good sign)

  2. #1 – “Real Zionists” are very much for foreign aid. We wouldn’t have had a state without it. Better read some history. And if Israel wasn’t bleeding money into West Bank settlememt building and IDF defense on areas that we’ll probably end up having to give back anyway, we’d need a lot less help.

  3. The Torah says no foreign leaders and no foreign money, Israel is a sovereign nation and not a protectorate of the United States or any other country.

  4. Cut the aid to U.N., Muslims, and Africans first. Israel would actually be better off without the “aid” that is really a grant to the American weapon manufacturers. Israelis won’t get “free” American weaponry, will subsequently develop and sell their own at a nice profit.

  5. The reason Israel receives aid from the USis because Israel is protecting the US’ interests. The cost of maintaining the military is is being carried by the US because they are benifiting from it. The US is only paying its rightful share.
