avi-weissThe Chief Rabbinate of Israel will accept letters confirming individuals’ Judaism from Avi Weiss, the Open Orthodox founder of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, which has tried tried wreak havoc on the Orthodox Jewish establishment.

The Rabbinate sent a letter today to Weiss’ attorney in Israel, Assaf Benmelech, affirming that it will accept all letters from Weiss confirming the Judaism of couples who want to wed in Israel.

Times of Israel reported that Weiss said he’s thankful “this injustice has been corrected and am deeply grateful for the overwhelming support I received from all over the world. This is a first step because this was never about me personally. I will continue to speak out until all rabbis of the International Rabbinic Fellowship (IRF) and the Rabbinical Council of America (RCA), will be formally recognized for this purpose,” he said.

In October, the rabbinate rejected such a letter from Weiss, pending an investigation into Weiss’ adherence to halacha. The move sparked outrage among liberal Jews, though it was loudly applauded by those in the frum world familiar with the goings-on at Weiss’ Chovevei Torah institution and his Hebrew Institute of Riverdale.

Weiss has introduced controversial innovations, including ordaining women as clergy through his Yeshivat Maharat.

  1. THE POPE WEARS A BIGGER KIPA THEN THIS BRAND OF JUDAISM.
    I AM NOT MAKING ALIYAH
    AND NOT MOVING TO RIVERDALE.

I feel a lot safer in Brooklyn.
We know the Rabbis We know the family
We know the Torah and most of all
    WE KNOW OUR TRADITIONS, UNCHANGED.

  2. Your term #Unfortunate” is the epitomy of what is unfortunate. When you don’t come close to Rabbi Weiss’s tzidkus and mesiras nefesh for clal yisroel. You may not know but last week a shammos of the Spinka Rebbe drove Rabbi Weiss to Chovavei where there was a special program with Chavavey an dthe Maharat program . The shamos went into chovavei, participted, ie, spoke to the Talmidim and later danced with Rabbi Weiss. B”H there are true Torah Yidden ublike yourselves who know what Kavod HaTorah and Kavod Habriyos are. Shame on You!!!!

  3. Shame on you. the Beis Hamikdash was destroyed because of how we treat each other and the lack of respect not because of people who went beyond the boundaries of normative halachic practice. To DACON9 i remember reading that the jews of Germany wrote that they prefer Germany, no more has to be said. One should never speak bad about Eretz Yisrael or another Jew,under any circumstances

  4. TO # 6: THERE IS KAVOD HABRIYOS – BUT THERER IS ALSO KAVOD HABRIS

TO # 6: THERE IS INDEED KAVOD HABRIYOS – BUT THERE MUST ALSO BE KAVOD HABRIS.

  5. It is not sinas chinum to speak out against kofrim. Rabbi, if you can call him that, Weiss goes repeatedly against the psak of Rav Yosef B Soloveitchik. He contravenes halacha and is no more than a Conservative rabbi masquerading as Orthodox. His so called yeshiva recently allowed Kohanim to marry giyoreses. They are pro toeva marriage. They flout halacha. I do not envy him when he stands before the bais din shel maala and has to defend his kefira. It should be interesting to see how he explains his apikorses then.

  6. To all of you who hate and despise Rabbi Weiss. Don’t be so sure that your opinions are correct Clapey Shmayoh. The real source of Rishus comes out of your camp not Rabbi Weiss’s.

  7. To #6

Certainly Rabbi Weiss’ innovations in Halacha are dubious at best. Rabbi Weiss may indeed mean well but his actions run contrary to normative Halacha and should be placed outside the tent of Torah.
The equivocation by the RCA in their denunciation of Rabbi Weiss, the failure to take a definite stand has opened up the door for today’s announcement.
The Chief Rabbinate’s backtracking brings shame on the honor of the Rabbinate. The current Chief Rabbis’ Fathers when they occupied the Chief Rabbinate would not have waffled or buckled to outside pressure.
The lack of fortitude on the part of Israel’s leadership may indeed be its most serious shortcoming. Particularly the Chief Rabbinate should stand firm in defense of Torah and Judaism.

  8. To big kup: the shamas drove R’ Weiss back after R’ Weiss went to be menachem avel the Stark family. People who’ve heard of R’ Weiss for years know that he’s done much chesed. But his mindset is disconcerting.

  9. Calm down everyone!!

Live your life and let others live theirs.
Are you online now? Rav Chaim said it is assur to have any connections to the internet. Yet here we are. Why? Because the hashkofah we follow is not that of bni brak. We follow our leaders and their hashkofos. If and when a question of yichus comes up you can ask YOUR ROV then. Until that point what ever he does and poskins, you have no say in it, just as R Chaim saying that college or the internet are assur, has no right to stop me from going to college and posting on this site. Why do we look down on anyone less frum hashgafos then us, when we ourselves dont follow the big rabbonim in EY? If we can choose are hashgafos why cant he?

  10. To MIESQ,
DO YOU HEAR YOUR OWN WORDS!!! Your first statement is dubious at best.
Your second statement is totally wrong.
Your third statement is for the RCA to deal with and is their problem.
What brought shame on the Rabbinate is their own original statement.

  11. Tzippi,
The fact that you don’t understand his mindset does not make it disconcerting.
BTW: to the editors, you know you misconstrued my previous statement and left out the most important part.

  12. #21: Let’s take your argument to its logical conclusion, shall we? So the Reform and Conservatives can coose their hashkafahs? What about Jews for J? Are they OK too?

At some point, you cross the line, and the rasha and chotei u’machatei es harabim, Weiss, has done so. He must be shunned and reviled in public to the fullest extent possible.

  13. This is the problem when the Rabbinate is under the control of government. Now, the govt. in Israel is deJudaizing the State and they are determined to make it Yidden-frei and discard Torah. This has been going on especially since Oslo, but has intensified to a speeding pace since this last election, where Lapid dictates! But, this is really an agenda being perpetrated on Torah and even l’havdil, it’s being done to religions all over because it is a milchamah neged H’. The Rabbis, it seems, probably didn’t have any choice. Who knows, if it were threats, money or something. Chazal tell us that at the end of days, there will be a tremendous increase in apostasy and a war against the Almighty. In the meantime, we pray for Hashem’s rachamim.
