Following President Donald Trump’s tough-talking speech to the United Nations General Assembly blasting the Iranian regime over the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran’s president fired back Wednesday.

Responding to Trump’s characterization of Tehran as “a murderous, rogue regime,” Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called Trump’s speech “ignorant, absurd and hateful rhetoric, ridiculously baseless.” He warned if the U.S. pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran would respond forcefully.

“I declare before you that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be the first country to violate the agreement,” Rouhani said, “but it will respond decisively and resolutely to its violation by any party. It will be a great pity if this agreement were to be destroyed by ‘rogue’ newcomers to the world of politics: the world will have lost a great opportunity.”

During his speech, the Iranian leader called the Israeli government a “rogue Zionist regime,” asserting that Israel “threatens regional and global security with its nuclear arsenal.”

Trump said in his speech Tuesday that the Islamic Republic “masks a corrupt dictatorship behind the false guise of a democracy.” He called the Iranian government “economically depleted” whose main exports are “violence, bloodshed and chaos.”
