The city of Tabriz, in northwestern Iran, formally declared its support for the Gaza Strip, with its mayor and that of Gaza City signing what they termed a “sisterhood declaration.”
Times of Israel reports that Mayor Alireza Novin of Tabriz and his Gaza City counterpart, Rafiq Mekki, made the announcement at a ceremony in the Iranian city on Shabbos, according to the Iranian FARS news agency.
The sisterhood move “was approved by [the] Tabriz Islamic City Council after last year’s savage attacks by the Zionist regime on the Gaza Strip,” Novin said. He added that the city will send a friendship convoy to Gaza in the near future as a show of support, according to Times of Israel.
The sisterhood declaration was made by the two cities as an independent move, and was not coordinated through the nonprofit global organization Sister Cities International.
