isaac-akermanJust two years after joining the Lakewood Township Committee, Isaac Akerman was named mayor of one the fastest growing Jewish communities in the United States at today’s 121st Township Committee Re-Organizational Meeting at Town Hall on Third Street in Lakewood, NJ.

Akerman takes over the role of mayor from Menashe Miller, who served in the post for two straight years. The role of mayor is largely a ceremonial one.

Steven Langert was installed as deputy mayor.

The other committee members are Meir Lichtenstein and Ray Coles.

The 36-year-old Akerman served previously on the Lakewood Planning Board for six years before joining the committee in 2011.

The event drew a large crowd that included State Senator Bob Singer, who served for 30 years on the Township Committee.

At the meeting, following the pledge of allegiance, the National Anthem was sung by Shua Kessin, accompanied by Hudi Greenberger.

The invocation was recited by Rabbi Moshe Lichtenstein, brother of Committeeman Lichtenstein. A prayer for armed servicemen was said by Captain Mark Siegel.

Menashe Miller and Meir Lichtenstein were sworn in after having been reelected in November. Miller has served on the committee since 2003.

Akerman was sworn in as mayor by Senator Singer and Langert was sworn in as deputy mayor. Akerman, in his remarks, committed to addressing pressing issues, including taxes, spending, traffic, and the Tent City nightmare.

The Committee passed numerous resolutions, announced appointments to municipal boards and committees, and filled a variety of other municipal posts.

The committeemen then each shared their thoughts and thanked various individuals who have been helpful to them personally and to the Township in general.

The floor was opened for comments from the public and the event concluded with the singing of “G-d Bless America” by Chazzan Braun.
