An affiliate of the Islamic State in Egypt claimed a series of attacks that left at least 27 people dead in North Sinai and Suez on Thursday, according to security officials. The ISIS wing known as the Sinai Province used a Twitter account to claim responsibility for the four attacks that took place within hours of one another on Thursday night.

The first attack was a bomb at a military headquarters, base and hotel in North Sinai’s capital city of Al-Arish, killing 25 people and injuring at least 58.

Suspected militants later killed an army major and wounded six at a checkpoint in Rafah while a roadside bomb in Suez city killed a police officer.

An attack on a checkpoint south of Al-Arish also wounded for soldiers, Reuters reports. The deadly attacks follow violence that erupted earlier this week after commemorations of the anniversary of the 2011 uprising. Read more.
