Israel has approved a multi-year NIS 5 billion plan with NIS 500 million in initial funding in order to secure its citizens in the north from both warfare and natural disasters, Minister of Defense Avigdor Liberman announced, following last week’s uptick in seismic activity in the region that sparked concern over a larger quake striking imminently.

A State Comptroller’s urgent report released last week said that Israel is structurally unprepared for an emergency situation from both natural disasters as well as potential warfare, prompting defense establishments to call an emergency meeting.

Israel is situated along the Syrian-African fault line which runs along the border between Israel and Jordan. It is a part of the Great Rift Valley, encompassing the area from northern Syria to Mozambique.
