israel-highwayNew immigrants to Israel will have an easier time converting their foreign driver’s license, MK Dov Lipman (Yesh Atid) said this week, according to a Haaretz report.

Lipman, himself an immigrant from the U.S., has been pushing to enable automatic transfers of licenses so as to do away with the high cost of fees and heavy bureaucracy involved.

Lipman applauded a recent decision by the Knesset Committee for Absorption and Immigration, Members to annul the requirement that new immigrants take a driving theory test in Hebrew, even if they fail the practical driving test twice. He argued to Transportation Ministry officials the theory test is an unfair challenge for new immigrants who do not yet have a command of Hebrew.

Haaretz reports that the Knesset committee is also considering an extension to the three-year period allocated for new immigrants to convert their license from the time they arrive in Israel. Lipman has asked that army service be excluded from this three-year period.

  1. This is ridiculous, the existing procedure is quick and easy and doesn’t cost much. Great one Dov, add it to your list of ridiculous laws.

  2. Reb Yid,

You must have done it 20 + yrs ago when it was simple process.

Today it entails endless visits and fees…it’s easier to get a new license in U.S. then convert one in Israel.
