A person is less likely to die in a car crash in Israel than in almost any other country in the world. According to the World Health Organization, about four people in every 100,000 died on Israel’s roads in 2011 – just one-third of the number dying in the U.S.

Additionally, Israel Transport Ministry figures show that the total number of fatalities on the roads in 2012 was the lowest in 50 years (although there was a 5% rise in 2013).

  1. Road accident statistics are normally measure in accidents per billion miles travelled.

In the US this is 33,000 fatalities per 3,000 billon miles, which is 11.2 fatalities per billion miles.
In Israel it is 325 fatalities per 30 billion miles, which is 10.8 fatalities per billion miles.
In the UK it is 2,000 fatalities per 300 billion miles, which is 6.5 fatalities per billion miles.

  2. At one time Israel was considered a country with a very high rate of car accidents and am surprised to hear that it b’h has been reduced.

  3. Look it up by Wiktionary:
Thunk by itself means something entirely different than this context.
However, the phrase “Who would have thunk it?”,
is translated to: Who would have thought that would happen?; Who would have guessed it?
