Israel expressed its strong opposition today to an Arab initiative, supported by the administration of Barack Hussein Obama, to hold a conference that would debate the possibility of a nuclear-free Middle East.
The conference would take place in Helsinki toward the end of 2012, or early in 2013.
Brig.Gen. Shaul Horev, the director of the Israeli Nuclear Energy Committee who reports directly to Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, immediately rejected the idea, reports Haaretz.
“In order to realize this idea there is need for prior conditions and a complete reversal of the current trend in the area,” Horev said. “This is an idea born in other areas and alien to the reality and political culture of the area. Nuclear demilitarization in the Middle East, according to the Israeli position, will be possible only after the establishment of peace and trust among the states of the area, as a result of a local initiative, not of external coercion.”

This doesn’t pass the smell test. The US would never support this — it is the largest nuclear weapons power in the region.
Conversely to this above report is the following statment issued yesterday…
“Israel has said it would sign the NPT and renounce nuclear weapons only as part of a broader Middle East peace deal with Arab states and Iran that guaranteed its security.”
The circuit breaker is for a reconvened NPT Conference to be held in Jerusalem on May 20th 2013. The Where; When; How; Why; Guests; Costs; Format; Flow; Duration and Intention are all ready to be presented. A twelve year timeline for global nuclear disarmament will provide the vision/fulcrum/pivot/track for all the following international trust building moves that need to be made. The timeline is as follows : Serious Consideration of the Idea 2012; Formal Organising 2012/2013; Conference-Agreement May 2013; IAEA Expansion 2013 to 2015; Inspections 2016 to 2018; Dismantlement 2019 to 2024. (All nuclear weapon states can return their weapons in a percentage manner, like poker players returning their toxic chips to the dealer one by one. It is all in the sequencing. Through this method the security of the people of the State of Israel will not be compromised. The first weapons to be dismantled will not be before 2019 anyway, and there will be many, many positive moves that will need to be made before that part of the plan is enacted.)
The seed funding required from various parties to host this conference will be repaid many times over if the right moves are made from here on in. All the nations in the Middle East will experience economic growth of more than 5% GDP per annum from 2013 onwards if this paradigm of vision, courage and trust building prevails.
I repeat…There are many timetables in the world. Jewish 5773; Christian 2012; Muslim 1432; Iranian Nuclear Enrichment Red Line Soon ??? The divine timetable will trump all others.
