gaza-strike-missileA new air defense system being developed by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which uses lasers to shoot down low-altitude threats, is able to bring down “mortars like flies,” Rafael’s CEO said.

Vice Admiral (ret.) Yedidia Yaari, former chief of the Israel Navy, said the Iron Beam system will be “very effective” once it becomes operational.

The system is designed to deal with threats that fly on too small a trajectory to be engaged efficiently by Iron Dome anti-rocket batteries.

  1. Awesome!
Watch the nay-sayers say that if the missles didn’t harm dozens of people then they were never a threat and no more dangerous than party-snappers, let alone fire crackers!

  2. Like flies? I don’t think so. It takes a lot more laser energy to shoot down rockets, artillery and mortars than to vaporize flies.

And when it rains, or there’s a sandstorm, (or the Fried parameter drops to less than 10 cm) forget it.
