Tel Aviv University researchers claim that plants can hear and speak.

A study of Evening Primrose flowers found that those exposed to the sound of a bee or similar synthetic sounds produced sweeter nectar within three minutes. This behavior raises the plant’s chance of attracting insects and increases cross pollination.

The flowers vibrated mechanically in response to the sounds, suggesting that entire flower serves as the plant’s hearing organ.

Setting up recorders, researchers found that tomato and tobacco plants emit inaudible sounds detected by many animals from yards away. Noticing that healthy and damaged plants emit different sounds, the researchers theorize that creatures may use such sounds to gain information about the plant’s condition.

  1. I don’t know about plants. But I’ve participated in numerous deep and meaningful conversations with Entenmann’s baked goods.
