The Supreme Court ruled that women may be appointed as administrators of botei din and struck down a requirement stipulating that administrators must be eligible to serve as city rabbis. The court argued that the position was administrative and unrelated to halachic operations.

“At a time when women occupy a place of honor in a variety of public service positions, it is inconceivable that appropriate representation will not be given in the management of the botei din,” Deputy Supreme Court President Elyakim Rubinstein wrote in the ruling.

Attorney Batya Kahana-Dror, director of the feminist Mavoi Satum, which submitted a court petition in 2014, described the breakthrough as “an historic breakthrough in the field of religion and the state.”

MK Uri Maklev of UTJ blasted the decision, saying, “Today’s ruling is not to prevent discrimination against women. The whole goal of the petitioners is to harm the standing of botei din. The duties of a beis din director are mostly not administrative but require extensive halachic knowledge.”

  1. What right do some off-the-street-people who made themselves into judges of the Supreme Court no less, have giving orders in a democrat country? Who do they think are? Why should Israeli citizens allow these nothings to run the country? This is nuts! Get rid of them!
