‘It Won’t Be Pretty’: Trump Promises To ‘Fight Back’ Against McCain

President Donald Trump promised retribution against Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., for his opposition to several GOP health-care plans and his comments implicitly criticizing Trump’s views and leadership on Monday night.

“People have to be careful because at some point, I fight back,” Trump said in an interview Tuesday with WMAL, a Washington, D.C. radio station.

“I’m being very nice. I’m being very, very nice. But at some point, I fight back, and it won’t be pretty,” Trump said.

Trump’s comments came as the White House girded for a preliminary vote on its budget resolution. Whether McCain would vote “yes” was unclear at the time of Trump’s interview.

“We need some votes from some of the Republicans. For some reason, they weren’t there on health care. They should have been. We thought we had it. John McCain voted ‘no,’ which was a shocker,” Trump said.

McCain offered a thinly veiled critique of Trump’s presidency Monday night in Philadelphia, where he received the Liberty Medal from the nonpartisan National Constitution Center.

“To refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain ‘the last best hope of Earth’ for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past,” McCain said in his remarks.

“We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil . . . We have a moral obligation to continue in our just cause, and we would bring more than shame on ourselves if we don’t,” he said.

In response to Trump’s latest comments, he told CNN: “I’ve faced far greater challenges than this.”

Trump has lashed out at McCain several times in recent months, most notably after the senator broke with Republicans and opposed two proposals to undermine the Affordable Care Act.

“John McCain never had any intention of voting for this Bill, which his Governor loves,” Trump tweeted on Sept. 23. “He campaigned on Repeal & Replace. Let Arizona down!”

The president appears eager to intensify his long-standing feud with McCain, whom he infamously criticized in 2015 for being captured and held a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said at the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

McCain, a Navy pilot, spent about five-and-a-half years as a captive of the North Vietnamese after his plane was shot down in October 1967. He was repeatedly tortured and for more than two years, held in solitary confinement.

  1. Senator McCain is dying of brain cancer. He has acknowledged his upcoming demise and is accepting it with characteristic bravery. Fifty years ago he refused an early release when he was captured in Vietnam because others had been held prisoner longer. As a result of his refusal, he was tortured for years and received permanently disabling injuries.

Does President Trump actually believe that his blustering threat will somehow cow McCain into changing his mind? Whatever else you may think of McCain, his personal bravery is far, far beyond anything Trump has ever experienced (or can even imagine).

  2. BEING A PRISONER doesn’t make one smart. He was thanked for his service. No one mocked him and he was praised. BUT!!! So far to date he admitted he is against PRESIDENT TRUMP. He is not for AMERICA. McCain is for his ego. Everyone is born equal but not everyone is born with equal abilities. McCain showed his abilities to be less then standard. People stood for him when he enters a room. That will remain. His time in government has passed. NEXT CASE!!!

    • one doesn’t have to fall in line with the presidents agenda to be for america! we have a congress! and separation of powers for a reason. but by all means go listen to some more talk radio!

  3. YOSEF. ISRAEL STANDS STRONG BECAUSE OF PRES TRUMP. Obama and Hilary would give it away. YOU are not used to a politician being a man and not a politically correct hamor. Now you have a president that’s stand up for his convictions and will fight for it. and he enters wealthy and will leave as he entered the WH unlike Hillary and all other politicians who enter as working class people and leave as MILLIONARIES IF NOT BILLIONAIRES. Clinton sold the white house bedroom for $10,000 a night to sleep there as a guest. And a whole list of problems from Obama. Obama bowed lower then the satan to all other nations NOW ALL OTHER NATIONS BOW TO AMERICA AND T HEY KNOW ISRAEL STANDS STRONG.

    • Just because Trump is pro-Israel doesn’t make him a tzadik. People get a little carried away, all because Limbaugh tells them what to think and say. Some people are brainwashed by CNN, others by Limbaugh and Co.

  4. McCain. War Hero. Dying of cancer. Late Age.

Needs all the hope he can have. Needs all the worth of American feelings and support.

    Today’s president? “Be Careful” warning.

Just what the cancer patient needs. A warning not to speak the full of his feelings.

I can care less about this Mr. Trump’s agenda. He is not the worker of the year and there are more people bankrupt because he lived his life than most others in America. Sheldon did not do much better.

Great president. Mr. McCain, we are with you. This is arrogant.

  5. McCain is no Tzadik, he is a corrupt politician like the rest of them!!!!

He is not concerned about the people who voted for him. He is ONLY concerned what The Press may write about him after he dies!!!!

Trump is not a Tzadikel either. It just happened that as a Yid, his stance l’gabai Israel is MUCH BETTER than the rest of the cronies on the “hill” and Washington!
