Japan will shut down its last functioning nuclear reactor on Monday, meaning the country will have its longest nuclear-power shutdown since the 1960s.
Before the Fukushima meltdown after the tsunami in 2011, nuclear power plants supplied about 30 percent of Japan’s power supply-but country has soured on nuclear power since then. The country’s plants have closed for either maintenance or safety checks and not reopened since.
Analysts say it should take about six months for all the safety checks and legal hurdles, and nuclear power is expected to be restored by December to the ones already shut down. But the average electricity bill in Japan has risen by 30 percent since Fukushima, and the country has been forced to import large amounts of coal and oil. Read more at BBC News.
